Today's hike was an interesting one, filled with moments of solitude and a unique perspective on the trail. Boostie and I, usually on different wake-up schedules, started the day in sync, which set a curious tone for the entire journey.
The Trail's Tales
I spent most of the day hiking alone, with Boostie following close behind. The trail markers were a delightful distraction, offering a mix of humor, sentiment, and oddity. Some made me chuckle, like the playful "Fool of a Took" and the nature-loving "Stop using AI (please!) – Nature". But it was the simple "Call your mom!" that resonated the most. It's a reminder of the human connections we often take for granted, especially out here in the wilderness.
A Mind's Eye
One thing that immediately stands out to me is my experience with aphantasia. For those unfamiliar, it's the inability to visualize mental images. I often get asked how I daydream or imagine my future without visual references. Well, my imagination is a vibrant place, despite this unique quirk. I can't see images, but I can hear sounds and create stories. It's like having an endless soundtrack and narrative playing in my head.
What many people don't realize is that visualization isn't the only way to dream. My mind's eye may be different, but it's just as powerful. I spent hours today imagining my future, from post-hike road trips to career paths and home life. It's a fun exercise, and it shows that our minds can create rich experiences beyond what we can physically see.
Nature's Wonders
The landscape today was a feast for the senses. Floating inchworms were everywhere, a constant reminder of the natural world around us. And the views! From the snow-capped Cascade peaks to the vibrant blue lake, nature put on a spectacular show. Mt. Thielsen, in particular, was a sight to behold. We considered a side quest up the mountain, but the view from the PCT was impressive enough. Sometimes, the journey is just as rewarding as the destination.
Dinner and Reflections
As the day turned to night, I craved a hearty dinner. Luckily, I had a surprise waiting for me - pad thai! It was a spicy treat after a long day of hiking. Boostie and I took our bear cans into the woods, a necessary ritual to keep the wildlife at bay. And I've started carrying Listerine, a small but important addition to my routine, especially after my recent gum infection.
In my tent, with Mt. Thielsen looming in the distance, I reflected on the day. It's amazing how a simple hike can offer so much - funny trail markers, a unique perspective on imagination, and breathtaking views. These are the moments that make hiking so captivating and rewarding.
