Switch 2 Oblivion Remastered: A Technical Marvel or a Frustrating Experience?
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has finally made its way to the Nintendo Switch 2, a year after its initial release on other platforms. With the Switch 2's less powerful hardware, there were concerns about how well the game would perform, but the port delivers a decent visual upgrade. However, performance issues persist, and the game's technical limitations become more apparent in open-world environments.
One of the standout features of the Switch 2 port is the inclusion of mouse support via detachable Joy-Cons, which greatly enhances menu navigation and bow targeting. Additionally, the game utilizes Nvidia's DLSS upscaler, which appears to be more advanced than the TSR used on other consoles. This technology helps improve visual clarity, especially in close-up areas like dungeons and towns.
In docked mode, the Switch 2 targets a 1080p final frame reconstructed from a native 960x540 resolution, providing a crisp visual experience. However, in portable mode, the DLSS target drops to 900p, resulting in a softer image quality. This trade-off is necessary due to the reduced horsepower of the Switch 2.
Despite the impressive visuals in certain areas, the game struggles with performance in open-world spaces. High-frequency details on elements like trees often suffer from flicker, shimmer, and noise, pushing the technology to its limits. Occlusion artifacts and stair-stepping in the Imperial City further highlight these technical challenges.
Visually, the Switch 2 version lags behind the Xbox Series S in many aspects. Foliage density is reduced, and certain trees are removed from the map. Draw distances are also affected, with more aggressive LODs limiting the visibility of castle structures and shadows. While the game maintains correct materialization as you move closer, the difference in range is noticeable compared to dedicated home consoles.
Texture quality is generally on par with the Xbox Series S for road signs and brickwork, but higher presets are exclusive to the PS5 and Series X. Interestingly, some materials, like mud pathways, are replaced with different assets on the Switch 2, making them harder to distinguish. The most significant visual downgrade is in tree shadows, which are simplified to basic blobs of shade.
On the positive side, Lumen reflections and GI (Global Illumination) are implemented effectively. SSR (Screen Space Reflection) is used as a fallback at a lower resolution, but the hybrid setup works well. Indirect light bounce is accurately simulated across dungeons and towns, matching the Xbox Series S in most scenarios. However, the Switch 2 version has slightly less scattering accuracy than the Series X.
To optimize performance, decimated animations are employed, causing NPCs at a distance to animate at 15fps, which can be distracting in the open world. The Switch 2 targets a 30fps cap, but it still suffers from frame pacing issues, with camera judder and traversal hitches. These hitches can exceed 230ms when galloping or encountering multiple enemies, making them unforgivable in a modern game.
Surprisingly, the Switch 2 seems to handle the 'degrading performance' issue better than other platforms. After an hour of play, no significant degradation was observed, possibly due to the 30fps cap. However, a camera bug and a reproducible crash were encountered, indicating that stability is still a concern. Overall, the hybrid rendering setup, which runs the original Oblivion logic beneath an Unreal Engine 5 layer, ensures authenticity to the 2006 original's systems and behaviors.
While the Switch 2 Oblivion Remastered is a fascinating technical feat for a handheld device, it is not without its frustrations. The technical limitations become more apparent in open-world environments, and the performance issues, though improved, are still a hindrance. A year later, it's challenging to consider this as the definitive tribute to a beloved game, but it remains an intriguing technical achievement.
